Nine years ago, veteran Southern California music promoter Paul Tollett had a vision for a U.S. festival based on those he'd attended overseas. And in 1999, Tollett created and developed one of the most critically-acclaimed festivals in the world, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. Set at the breathtakingly beautiful and peaceful Empire Polo Field in Indio, CA, the multi-day alternative-rock fete has become a travel destination for music fans from across the globe.
In its eight outings, Coachella has seen performances from a wide variety of artists that cross musical genres. Past performers have included superstar acts such as Radiohead, Coldplay, Bjork, Oasis, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails and The Arcade Fire. Along with this, the festival has become known for staging some of the most talked about reunions from The Pixies, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Happy Mondays and Rage Against the Machine. Beyond this, each year the line-up boasts a variety of up-and-coming bands and the top DJs in the world. Prior to the 2006 Coachella festival, Tollett and Goldenvoice produced and released the Coachella film. Filled with six years of highlights, the two-hour feature film captures the magical sense of adventure that is unique to the festival.
Following the success of the Coachella festival, Tollett recognized that California was lacking a country music festival and envisioned a festival geared towards this genre. With this vision in mind--and with the help of independent promoters Louis Messina and Steve Moore, both of whom are veterans in the country genre--Tollett forged ahead. And in May 2007, Tollett introduced California to a country music festival now known as "Stagecoach." In its first year, the line up boasted more than 60 acts including legendary country music artists such as George Strait, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson and Brooks and Dunn. The critically acclaimed two-day concert drew upon music of various genres: mainstream country, bluegrass, folk, roots rock and alt-country and featured four distinct performance areas (the Tundra Mane Stage; along with the Palomino, Appaloosa and Mustang stages).
This is a long way from the mid 1980's, when Tollett--together with Goldenvoice--positioned himself as one of the dominant alternative promoters in Southern California by putting music shows into historical Los Angeles venues including The Palladium, The Hollywood Palace, Long Beach Arena, Staples Center, The El Rey Theatre, The Henry Fonda Theatre, the Home Depot Center and more.
